Who is eligible for Medicare?
Medicare is a government-funded health insurance program that provides health coverage to Americans who qualify. Medicare provides its beneficiaries with access to inpatient services, long-term care facilities, and skilled nursing care, among other things.
You may be eligible for Medicare personal health insurance if you are 65 years of age or older and:
• You or your spouse is eligible to receive Social Security benefits.
• You or your spouse paid Medicare taxes through your job.
• You are receiving or are eligible for railroad retirement benefits.
• You are the dependent parent of an insured deceased child.
You may also qualify for Medicare if you are under the age of 65 and:
• You are eligible and have been eligible for Social Security disability for at least 24 months and paid Medicare taxes through your work.
• You meet certain requirements and receive disability pension from the railroad retirement board.
• You have Lou Gehrig’s disease and receive Social Security disability.
• You are the child or spouse of someone who paid Medicare taxes and qualify to receive Social Security disability.
• You have permanent kidney failure and are eligible for Social security or railroad retirement.
In some cases, those who are over the age of 65 and do not qualify for Medicare through traditional means may be able to receive Medicare health insurance by paying a monthly premium.
Anyone who qualifies for Medicare Part A will also automatically qualify for the other parts of Medicare. These are generally available to most individuals for a premium, and they can provide for a range of health services not covered through Medicare Part A, such as physician care and drug benefits.
