Who can purchase student health insurance?
When your kids head off to college, health insurance may be the last thing on their minds. It is probably not the last thing on yours, however. You may be wondering whether your family health insurance policy will continue to cover them or whether you will need to purchase a new policy. Could student health insurance be the best choice for your kids?
College students often have access to a student health clinic, but these clinics may be limited in the services they provide. If your child requires more extensive care or has a chronic condition, access to a reliable student health plan can save your family thousands in unexpected medical bills.
Many health insurance plans for students are based on the managed care model. They will often provide coverage for your child’s college clinic and through preferred providers for basic services that may include visits with a healthcare provider, X-rays and lab services, and emergency care.
Most student plans for health coverage in California require that the covered individual is enrolled in a minimum number of credit hours. Different plans may have different requirements. If your child is taking insufficient hours to qualify for a specific plan, another plan may cover his or her needs more appropriately.
Whether your student is going away for college or staying close to home, a student plan for health care in California just makes sense. You may not be able to protect your child from sports-related injuries, food poisoning, or from the kinds of illnesses that commonly sweep through dormitories, but you can provide him or her with access to affordable, high quality healthcare through health insurance.
Student policies are available for those who are enrolled in school. If your child is not enrolled in school or is enrolled on a part-time basis only, you may be able to keep him or her enrolled on your family policy until he or she is 26. Talk to a qualified insurance agent about your options.
