What is a Special Class Premium?
When you have a pre-existing condition, you may worry that your options for health insurance may be extremely limited or expensive. A pre-existing condition is any diagnosed health condition that existed prior to the date your coverage began. Health conditions include such health problems as high blood pressure, asthma, and heart disease. Although it is true that it can become more difficult to locate affordable insurance when you have certain pre-existing health conditions, you should know that you do have options.
Some personal health insurance companies offer those with pre-existing conditions insurance policies with what is called a special class premium. You will then be responsible for paying your normal monthly premium as well as an additional premium amount, or a special class premium, for the pre-existing condition. You will still be responsible for paying any other expenses related to your care, including copayments, co-insurance, and your deductible.
Other insurance companies may require you to wait a specific period of time, often between six and 18 months, before providing any health coverage relating to your pre-existing condition. They will, however, cover health care costs not related to your condition. For example, if you have high blood pressure, they may not cover the prescription medications you need to maintain a healthy blood pressure. They will, on the other hand, cover other prescription medications for conditions not related to your blood pressure as long as they are listed in their formulary.
You may also be able to find affordable insurance options through high-risk pools available through the state or through group health insurance through your employer. Because both of these options are based on group principles, you will most likely not be responsible for paying a special class premium.
Pre-existing conditions do not preclude affordable insurance. Contact one of our insurance agents today to learn more about your options.
