What does Medicare Part B Cover?
Medicare Parts A and B combined are known as original Medicare, and they allow you to see any doctor or visit any health care facility within the Medicare network of approved providers. Medicare Part B health coverage is the part of Medicare that handles expenses associated with doctors and outpatient charges.
Anyone who is eligible for Medicare Part A is also generally automatically eligible for Medicare Part B. Unlike Medicare Part A, however, subscribers may be required to pay a premium for Medicare Part B personal health insurance. Premiums are typically withheld from your Social Security payments, although you can opt out of this if you prefer.
Medical services, including outpatient services, doctor’s services, mental health treatments, and medical equipment are generally covered. You will be responsible for coinsurance or a copayment. Laboratory and X-rays are covered. Outpatient hospital services and home health care are also covered. Chiropractic care by a Medicare-approved chiropractor is covered under certain circumstances.
Some preventative services are covered by Medicare Part B health insurance. These include:
• Alcohol abuse screening and counseling services
• Bone mass measurements
• Cardiovascular screenings
• Colorectal screenings
• Depression screenings
• Diabetes testing for those with risk factors and self-management training
• EKGs
• Flu, hepatitis, and pneumococcal shots
• Glaucoma tests
• Mammograms
• Obesity screening and nutrition services
• Pap tests and pelvic exams
• Prostate cancer screenings
• Smoking cessation counseling
The costs associated with Medicare Part B are linked to your income, and an annual deductible applies. Once you meet your annual deductible, you will be responsible for a copayment for covered services and equipment. You must seek care from a Medicare-approved provider or facility in order for your coverage to apply, and you are eligible to receive one routine care visit every year.
