Preventing Falls
Falls are a leading cause of injury in older adults. Each year 1 in 3 adults over the age of 65 fall, and about 2 million are treated for injuries caused by falls. Traumatic brain injuries and hip fractures, both of which can be caused by falls, can be a serious threat to senior’s health and independence.
The good news is that many falls can be prevented. Here are some tips to keep in mind:
• Exercise: Lack of exercise can result in weak legs, which can increase the chance of falling. Exercise programs are good for increasing strength and improving balance to make falls less likely.
• Effects of medication: Some medications or a combination of them can have side effects such as drowsiness and dizziness, which make falls more likely. Make sure your doctor or pharmacist reviews all your medications for drug interaction and risky side effects.
• Poor vision: Have your eyes checked out every year and make sure your glasses and contacts are with the right prescription strength.
• Home safety: Approximately half of falls happen at home. Identify hazards and remove them to make your home safer.
Here’s a checklist to make your home safer:
• Remove objects you can trip over
• Make sure your rugs are not prone to slipping
• Keep items you use often in a place that can be reached without using a step stool
• Have grab bars installed in your tub, shower and toilet
• Use non-slip mats on shower floors
• Improve the lighting in your home
• Have handrails installed in all staircases
• Wear shoes inside and outside of your home
