If I have a Pre-Existing Condition, What are my Options for Health Insurance?
A pre-existing condition is any health condition you may have prior to becoming insured. If you have a pre-existing condition and are seeking health insurance, you may be concerned about whether or not you will be able to find affordable insurance. In fact, you do have several options.
Employer-offered health coverage is often one of the most affordable options for those with pre-existing conditions. You may be subject to a waiting period that ranges from six to 18 months before benefits will be paid for any health issues related to your pre-existing condition. However, other health care will be covered. If you had previous health coverage, you may also qualify for insurance coverage, thanks to HIPAA, or the Health insurance Portability and Accountability Act.
Group health insurance can also be an affordable option for you. Group policies are most often found through employers, but you may also find them through trade or professional organizations as well, particularly if you are self-employed. An insurance professional may be able to help you find the group policy that best meets your needs.
Those with pre-existing conditions who are seeking individual health insurance may also look towards a high-risk insurance pool. A high-risk insurance pool is organized by the state, self-funded, and generally administered through a major insurer or third-party administrator. Although they can be costly alternatives, they provide coverage much like any other insurance plan, and you may be able to choose between plans, such as an HMO or PPO.
Finally, if you are low income or unemployed, you may qualify for Medicaid or Medi-Cal. Medi-Cal provides coverage to those who are under 21 or over 65, blind or disabled, pregnant, low-income, or who meet certain other criteria. You may have access to routine care, lab work, care related to your pre-existing condition, and other crucial care.
